During the installation of new coated steel piles as part of a jetty construction project, small areas of damage occurred, exposing the steel to the corrosive marine environment. The removal of the existing protective coating led to localised corrosion, which needed to be addressed promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the longevity of the structure.
The key challenge was to carry out the repairs underwater, where conventional repair methods would be impractical. The solution required a material that could be applied effectively below the waterline and provide durable protection against the corrosive effects of seawater.
UNIQUE POLYMER SYSTEMS provided a specialised underwater repair solution using UPS 250 UWC Underwater Ceramic. The repair process involved the following steps:
Surface Preparation
- The existing coating and surface corrosion were removed by high-pressure water jetting the substrate at 5,000 psi. This step was crucial to ensure a clean surface for the application of the repair material.
Application of UPS 250 UWC UNDERWATER CERAMIC
- Small volumes of UPS 250 UWC were mixed above the waterline and then transferred into thick polythene bags.
- Trained divers carried the bags below the waterline, where the repair was to be carried out.The material was applied by cutting away the corner of the bag and piping the UPS 250 UWC onto the prepared surface.
- The material was then spread evenly by hand and with an applicator to achieve a nominal 1mm wet film thickness, providing robust protection against further corrosion.
The application of UPS 250 UWC successfully repaired the damaged areas on the jetty's steel piles, preventing further corrosion and ensuring the long-term durability of the structure. The underwater application method proved effective, allowing for precise and durable repairs even in challenging conditions.
