Gas Pipe Leak Repaired On Site

Unique Polymer Distributor based in Pacific Rim solves problem for Major Company in the area.

Problem:

Pin holes and cracks in a 16" pipe line carrying gas, as specified below:

• Gas = N2 Nitrogen
• Temperature = 30-40 C
• Pressure = 3,5kg/cm2
• Pipeline OD. 12"

A further MAJOR consideration whilst choosing Thistlebond to do this application was the MOISTURE on the Outer Diameter of the Pipe.

Solution:

 
Application of Thistlebond TRK19000 (Resin and Hardener) PLUS Thistlebond TRK19009 (Glass Tape) - with a final application of Thistlebond TR19605 Thistlewrap Bandage.

Application:

After exposing the pipe line by removing the protective lagging, the pipe surface was hand prepared by ensuring it was roughened up as much as possible and DRIED.

The Thistlebond TRK19000 was then mixed and applied to the pipe and immediately after this had been applied, the TRK19009 Glass Tape was wrapped around the pipe with an approximate 50% overlap. This procedure was carried out three times (Three Wraps).

After curing of the resin/hardener had taken place, the Thistlewrap Bandage was applied over the Glass Tape repair.

Thistlewrap Bandage could now be applied to the repair.

 
Considerations:

The pipe was also found to have fairly thin walls, so one other advantage of the Thistlebond Repair was to increase the thickness of the pipe wall around the defective area, thereby giving the client some peace of mind regarding the LIFE expectancy of the pipe line.

The complete application had to be carried out whilst the pipe was in service. The SURFACE TOLERANT characteristics of the Thistlebond TRK19000 made this possible.

The completed repair, after application of Thistlewrap Bandage.
