Do your customers have leaking pipes?

The use of WRAPPING techniques is a tried and tested method of sealing leaking pipes. We can supply the materials required for such repairs in several different formats. In order to make the correct selection please use this document as a guide.

There are FOUR methods that we can use to seal leaking areas:

1. Thistlewrap
2. Resin & Hardener + Reinforcing Tape
3. Elastomer Repair + Reinforcing Tape
4. Metal Repair + Reinforcing Tape.

1. Thistlewrap.

This product is supplied in moisture-sealed packets and comes complete ready to use as one single item. It is supplied in FOUR different sizes that cover pipe sizes from 15mm through 300mm.

You can read detailed information with regard to which bandage is appropriate for what size pipe work, pressure and temperature limitations by clicking on this link: Thistlewrap Information Pack. (This is an MS Word document).

In general, this product will cover the following temperatures and pressure:

Maximum service pressure 10 bar (150 psi) - *note: HIGHER pressures can be achieved by first plugging the hole with Thistlebond TRK19060 - metal grade putty) - up to 50 bar (725 psi) - attached data sheet.

In the photograph below you can see on the CUT-AWAY section that both the BASE material and ACTIVATOR material are all together so there is NO need to measure out any mixing ration.

Maximum service temperature 150°C.

IF the pipe is leaking and cannot be isolated, then Thistlebond TRK19060 can be used to first plug the hole prior to wrapping. The TRK19060 can cure in approximately 5 minutes to enable a maximum 15 minute turnaround on the repair.

This method of pipe repair should be anticipated by having stocks of bandages already available for use - as when a pipe begins to leak, a repair needs to be carried out as a priority. End users should be encouraged to hold some of each bandage size in their own inventory. This is rather like a Fire Extinguisher - you need to have it JUST IN CASE!

2. Resin & Hardener + Reinforcing Tape:

This method is best used where pipe work is larger than 300 mm. This type of repair can be used up to an indefinite size effectively.

This method allows for leaks at temperatures of up to 180°C and pressures up to 60 bar (900 psi) to be sealed both quickly and effectively.

The product required for this type of repair is TRK19000 Standard Resin. This comes in two parts (base and activator). Glass Tape is also required for this repair and sealing application.

The photographs below show how this effective method of pipe sealing can be achieved. One of the main benefits of using this method is that the high cost of removing and replacing pipe work can be avoided. In some cases indefinately.

3. Elastomer Repair + Reinforcing Tape.

By using the elastomer products as supplied by Thistlebond (TR305 - '60' Durometer / TR320 '80' Durometer) combined with the reinforcing fabric (TRK19007/9) effective repairs can be made to rubber pipe work in the same manner as with the Resin & Hardener.

4. Metal Repair + Reinforcing Tape.

By using the Metal Repair products as supplied by Thistlebond (TR105) combined with the reinforcing fabric (TRK19007/9) effective repairs can be made to Metal pipe work in the same manner as with the Resin & Hardener.

Thistlebond offers a complete solution package for all problems concerned with Pipe Work, Flanges, Pipe Elbows and other areas - where either a temporary or semi-permanent repair can be accomplished.
