Example of a Successful Application

Ballast Tank Refurbishment

The Problem:

A client required a high performance marine coating system for the long-term corrosion protection of mild steel ballast tanks on its oil tankers.

The oil tanker in this photograph was originally commissioned in 1985 and as part of a refurbishment programme in 2002, 8 ballast tanks totalling 15,000m² had been earmarked for refurbishment.

The material needed to be capable of easy application to rusty steelwork, which could only be prepared by wire brush.

The Solution:

ThistleBond 152 SFE was recommended for this application on account of its excellent adhesion to manually prepared or damp steel.

The substrate was wire brushed to remove any loose rust and our two component, solvent-free epoxy coating ThistleBond 152 SFE was then applied by the client's own contracting team.

All involved with the contract were impressed with the ease of application of the material. A further contract was awarded for a larger vessel immediately afterwards with ballast tanks totalling 18,000 m².
